December 30, 2009

NATIONAL ARCHVES & RECORDS ADMINISTRATION (NARA)

The National Archives was created in 1934. In the past, individual government agencies had to maintaining their own records. For that, only some took great care of the materials, but as for the many others, they did not.

The National Archives was established by the Congress in 1934 with the assistance of the Archivist of the United States as the chief of administrator.

In 1937, the Archivist of the United States reported that nearly 1,360,000 cubic feet of records could be transferred to the National Archives. The volume of records continued to grow as the World War II records poured in.

As for what the National Archives & Records Administration (NARA) is about, it’s the nation’s record keeper. It keeps records of important documents and other materials that are used in business.

When visiting the Archives, they provide services for us to find clues about your family history, also allowing us to find out more about a particular history event that interest you, for example the World World II, etc..

NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF SINGAPORE (NAS)

Singapore’s National Archives (NAS) was established in 1968. It was previously known as National Archives and Records Centre (NARC).

The NAS is a place where we store the memories of Singapore which allows future generation to know more and understand our different cultures and heritage. This memories include things from business documents to private memoirs and photographs to prove. Even i myself find this place a very useful source to know more about the Singapore’s history.

The services provided there consist of Records Management and Preservation, Providing Access, meaning allowing people to use the materials there to understand about certain issues. Also, they provide training and consultation. Seminars will also be held. Last but no least, Archives Conservation Service, by which means treatment to documents so as to conserve it better.

For the NAS, they have online exhibitions consisting of enhanced interactive multimedia to allow viewers learn through the click of the mouse.
